For the Harvard School of Public Health, CSR conducted a series of surveys of alcohol and drug use among college students throughout the United States. Approximately 140 different colleges and universities took part in the effort. Mail surveys were sent to a random sample of students from each cooperating school. The initial survey attained a response rate of near 70%. Response rates were always over 50% for the succeeding surveys over a 10-year span. Between 14,000 and 18,000 completed questionnaires were obtained in each of the various surveys. The results, which received considerable attention nationally, were used to highlight the problem of binge drinking among college students and to correlate this behavior with many adverse outcomes in student's lives. In later years, a web version of this survey was integrated into the survey methodology.
