CSR is part of the Harvard team that is working to develop a set of national, standardized survey instruments for measuring patients= experiences with getting healthcare in both ambulatory and in-patient settings. The overarching goals are to develop a set of instruments that: 1) allow meaningful comparisons of healthcare providers and systems, affording patients and other purchasers of healthcare the opportunity to make more informed health care choices; and 2) facilitate quality improvement efforts. The instruments that have evolved with CSR=s contributions, including extensive cognitive evaluation of questions and field testing of mail and telephone versions of instruments, have been subsequently adopted as Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) instruments. Survey instruments have been developed for reporting on: health plans; hospitals; Medicare; Medicaid; dialysis facilities; nursing homes; adults with chronic conditions;
children with chronic conditions; persons with mobility impairment; provider groups; and individual physicians. The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) sponsored the research consortium that conducted this work. More information about the CAHPS projects is available at: https://www.cahps.ahrq.gov/.
